Do you know your personal home style?

Do you know your personal home style?

Lots of people don't, and that's ok!! I think that homes should be as unique as the families that live there, so not every home should look the same. AND...I am a big fan of mixing styles if you 1) like them and 2) they serve your family well.

But here's a list of questions if you want to figure out your preferred home style...

1- Name a place where you really enjoyed how you *FELT*

This could be a favorite vacation spot, where you got married, on top of a mountain after a hike, with friends by the lake, your first apartment in the city...it could be anywhere. First identify the "where" and then figure out the "what" about it you liked so much. Was it all the natural light? Was it the color scheme? Was it the feeling of nature all around you? Was it because it was large enough to house all your people? This all plays a big part into your personal style and how you want your home to feel.

2 - Name an article in your home currently that you *LOVE*

Maybe it's a piece of furniture from a relative you love, maybe it's a pattern or color on the fabric on a pillow or chair that you love, maybe it's a piece of art or a photograph, maybe it's dish or candlestick because you love the way it feels or how the light reflects on it. Pulling from things you love help to drive inspiration for the rest of your home style.

3 - What is the era or finish/texture on the piece you love?

This might require a little bit of research, but that's why @google & @Pinterest exist, right? If you don't know what era or particular texture your favorite item is, you can do a reverse google image search of your exact item (by uploading a photo) and Google can tell you more about it. Then get to Pinterest and type in that style. Scrolling through some images until one jumps out at you that you love.

4 - what colors are you drawn to naturally?

You might be surprised, but a lot of people actually dress like their home! If you prefer to wear neutrals and natural fibers, chances are that is something that will play into the kind of home style you have as well.

5 - if you could remodel your home, what things do you wish you had that would serve you and your family better?

This sounds like a funny question, but finding out what you NEED in your home helps to figure out your lifestyle. Someone that loves a minimalist style but lives like a colorful maximalist isn’t going to jive. So think about what elements would help to serve you and your family better on a day-to-day basis. Maybe you would like to have more storage space in your bathroom for linens and toiletries. Maybe you wish your living room had built in bookshelves to house your collection. Maybe you’d like to open up the kitchen to the living room for easier sight lines to the kids playing while you’re cooking. Or maybe you like to unwind with a record playing and a glass of wine, so creating a quiet space for you to relax is important. I’m a firm believer in that our homes are meant to serve us, so designing spaces that can help you better handle the ebbs and flows of your daily life matter.
