How To Create A Home You Love - Bedroom Edition
The Bedroom
Welcome to another edition of “How To Create A Home You Love” where we go room-by-room and share how to organize and style each space. This month, we’re tackling the bedroom!
For most people, a bedroom is just the place you sleep at night. And while that may be true, it’s also the last room you see before you go to sleep and the first room you see when you wake up. So for me, making this space feel calm helps me relax at day's end and keeps my anxiety at bay when I wake up.
So just like how I organize my kitchen, I like to go in sections in my room, too.
The Bed:
When it’s a warm/sunny day, I like to wash my sheets and place them on the bed while they’re still damp. Crazy I know, but it leaves your sheets SO soft and crisp and cool! This is the method in case you want to give it a try.
Once they’re dry, I add my cotton waffle blanket, our duvet + duvet cover and pillows. There’s a million+ ways to style your bed, but my go-to is just to pull everything up nice and tight and layer in just a couple throw pillows. It’s simple, pretty and feels like climbing into a crisp hotel bed at the end of the day. I also love having an upholstered headboard for relaxing against while sipping tea and watching a sitcom at night.
Side Tables:
Even when a room isn’t large (like ours), I still recommend having some kind of bedside table with a lamp on each side. It adds to the cozy factor when it’s dark outside and it’s functional for leaving your glasses or other pre-sleep items.
We keep a few books or journals tucked away in ours, but I also like to have a small vase with a couple flowers on my side whenever I can. It makes me feel fancy and I like seeing them first thing in the morning. I also keep my favorite lip balm and hand oil I put on every night before bed. Matt’s side is more utilitarian and holds his wallet or anything from his pockets at the end of the day. Having a small basket for these necessary but not-so-pretty things can help the appearance and the functionality of a small nightstand.
Dressers:
We have two MCM dressers in our room. One tall boy that we keep a TV on (we love a good sitcom before bed) and another larger dresser with a large vintage mirror. I learned from Marie Kondo years ago that if your stuff doesn’t have a proper home (meaning if what you have cannot be stored well), you should probably donate it or find a different spot for it. So I make sure to keep our dressers uncluttered and fairly organized with like items.
To style our dresser, I have a gold tray to hold all of our perfumes and colognes, a jewelry tower, a plant and a candle. Again, it’s just my recipe of pretty + simple + useful. For me personally, empty spaces in my room = less stress to me.
The Closet:
Our closet isn’t very large, and it’s still a space we’re hoping to completely redo in the future, but to make it work for us now, I use velvet hangers and hanging storage units for bulky sweaters and sweatshirts. Again, that Marie Kondo method of making sure each piece has a proper home is important when organizing your closet. Every time I donate a bag of clothes to the thrift store, I feel such a relief! I have learned to just keep the things I truly love and feel fantastic in.
I’m a bit of a shoe fanatic, so I keep out my favorite seasonal shoes and store the others in a rubbermaid in the back of the closet. It helps me to keep out only what I need and not worry about the rest.
Matt also has a shelf in the closet where he keeps his shorts, pants and shirts. One day when we renovate this part of our room, we want to add some drawers into the space for better storage. I’m also planning to add some pretty wallpaper and a vintage inspired light to make this space even prettier.
The rest of the room:
I like our bedroom to feel like a bit of a jewel box, so we painted the entire room a medium blue jean blue called Debonair (by Sherwin Williams). This room gets a TON of natural light so the darker color doesn’t feel too drab. I also love how the golden glowy wood of the mcm furniture in the room looks up against it.
Since we live in the very warm South, a ceiling fan just makes sense. And while most are pretty unattractive to look at, we love and found this one! The light is rarely used, but the flowing air is a delight all year round.
I have a couple pieces of thrifted art hanging in our room as well! Again, I love simplicity in a bedroom to create that calm environment, but you could also do a gallery wall or tapestry piece to make the room feel cozier.
I hope these few simple things help you fall more in love with your home. These simple changes, even to an unfinished bedroom like ours, still allows you to enjoy your home. And enjoying our home…that’s the goal :)
